Apex
Air Oil-Cooler W/ Thermostat
**** DISCOUNTINUED ****
This will REPLACE the factory Oil "Warmer" and utilizes the factory “Pass Through” Bolt.
Multiple in flight tests have shown a 20-40+F degree drop versus the factory setup when using a 10 row air heat exchanger. Conclusions are that the factory setup is actually an oil warmer. The Apex Sled was designed to be ridden in sub zero temperatures and warming the oil is very important for the original application. The factory setup does not work when flying in 80+F ambient temps for sustained periods. The situation is compounded as engine coolant temp rises in these conditions adding additional heat to your oil. With this new setup the Engine Coolant AND Oil Temps are typically very close to each other around 180-200F. The factory oil warmer often produces Oil Temps to 240+F when flying in the summer heat.
This new unit has a 180F thermostat built in. If the thermostat fails, it fails in the open position allowing oil to continue to circulate to engine.
Kits are supplied with Thermostat Adapter w/ 22mm x -8AN fittings, Machined Aluminum Cap & Viton O-Ring, Machined Aluminum Alignment Bushing, and a new “Pass Through” Bolt Viton O-Ring. Customer reuse the factory Oil Warmer Pass-Through Bolt and drill it for safety wire.
Customer supplies hose, fittings, and an air heat exchanger as they will vary per install. From flight testing it is recommended that if your flying season will be in 90-100F ambient climates you should consider a 16 row heat exchanger. See recommendations below. It is also recommend that your new air heat exchanger be mounted BELOW the level of the new Thermostat Adapter. This will eliminate “drain back” of the cooler to the crank case during storage that would create an extended period of no oil circulation on startup.
The CSF Fluid Cooler #8119 is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and what I’m currently using. It is a VERY robust unit and dual pass. It uses 22mm AN x 8AN that you will need to obtain separately. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/csf-8119
This Ebay unit is being tested and used by some as it appears
to give a more robust mounting solution.
The Derale units have proven a bit more particular in mounting to eliminate any potential for cracking. If the Derale units are used it is recommended to mount a spacer between the upper and lower mounting tabs and use long bolts to incorporate both upper AND lower tabs in your mounting solution – Do not mount off of only upper or lower tabs as they are part of the upper and lower cooling plates and appear to the source of a few failures.
